Biography

Bernard McGing was born in 1807 in Westport, Mayo, IrelandG. He and Mary Walsh were married in 1837 in Westport, Mayo, IrelandG. He died on January 3, 1883, at age ~76, in Ormskirk, Lancashire, EnglandG.
Bernard McGing was also known as Barney McGing. He was also known as Bernard McGing. He was also known as Bryan McGing. Could this be Bernard Ging, born 1807 in Dublin? I think so. Will use that as a starting point because he did exist :)

On my web page there is a birth list that contains records from the parish of Aughagower. Bryan and Mary (from Tonlegee) have a son Thomas born 12 Nov 1843.
They also have a daughter Bridget born in 1846 Perhaps the baby died before they set out for England. They don't appear in the birth lists after 1850.

But Brian/Bernard and family shows up in 1851 UK census and every census thru 1891.
1851 census says born 1811.

Barny McGinn born 1811 near Wesport Mayo. Left Ireland around 1850 for Ormskirk Lancashire arrived with three sons Joseph, John & ?Patrick. In 1851 had James. Any ifo' on the three sons would be wonderful.

Hi, Maureen,
Well, I don't know that YOUR line is from Westport, Mayo, but mine certainly is. My Mary Walsh (or Welsh) married Barney McGing, and they and their chidlren moved to Lancashire, England, at the time of the Famine. My great great grandfather was born just in England just in time to be included in the 1851 Census. (Research):Oldest McGing
The question is how does this person fit with the theoretical lineage DNA is proposing? As one of teh oldest, he/she could be a sibling to others we know of but are unaware of teh sibling relationship. If a Male McGing/McGinn.Ging of this line could Y-DNA test at least a 37 (67 is better) we'd know more and could triangulate back to the shared ancester. Moving earlier in time here is all conjecture, but looking for evidence and DNA is a key piece.

I am honestly not at all sure about this line; Bernard, Brian, Barney, not sure.

March 5, 1871. Thonas Lally to Mary Gibbons
witnesses: Pat Dolan and Mary Bourke.1,2 He died on February 26, 1904, at age ~58, in Tourmakeady, Mayo, IrelandG.1,2
Thomas Lally married Mary Gibbons. Mary's parents were Luke Gibbons and Sarah (Sallog) Thornton, Nora's great-great-aunt. Their children were Patrick, Tom (a policeman in the Youngstown/Shannon area), Martin, Michael, Mary Kerrigan (lots of them in Chicago) and Sarah Walsh - named for her grandmother, living in Chicago with one son. The above-mentioned Michael married Bridget Boyle. Their son is Tom Lally who married Mary McGing (Mae).

Mae McGing stated: Thomas Nellie was also in trouble with the landlords. I mean my husband's grandfather. The old people here told me they were great Fenians, most of them. Then there was another Lally, a Thomas Lally, who was evicted from Derryveeney. He was a relation. They were known as the Lally Seans. They migrated to Co Meath in the thirties and prospered there. My sister Peneloope (Nuala) is married to one of them in Chicago. The book gives a very harrowing description of the eviction.

Ellen Lally (nee Boyle) was originally from the Ballybanaun region, which was the region from which our own John Boyle originated from prior to his eviction by Bishop Plunkett in 1860.It is not yet known whether the two were related.

However, at the time when John O'Boyle was re-settled in Churchfield after the evictions, two Lally families were also resettled on the 50-60 acre allocation of land. Perhaps Pat and Ellen were one of the families ?

Pat and Ellen had fine, very strong sons, one of which was Thomas Lally born 1843. And so it was that Mary Gibbons was to marry Thomas Lally. (Research):Now I will go back to my husband's grandfather, Thomas Nellie. He married Mary Gibbons who lived close by and had a family of eight. There was Pat, Mary, John, Michael, Bridget Thomas, Sarah and Martin. Pat went to America and died young there. Mary married a Jim Kerrigan in Tourmakeady. John married a Flanagan woman from this area in Cleveland, and they had a large family. Michael my husband's father married Bridget Boyle from this area and had a family of four. Michael died young. Tommie, my husband, we have a family of seven. Mary married Jim Prendergast and they have one son and two girls. Paddy married a Bridgie Lally and they have five girls and two sons.

From Matin Heneghan files:

Thomas did not get on very well with his wife Mary's grandparents Martin Gibbons and Bridget Malone Gibbons, due to a dispute over ownership of land.Eventually Martin and Bridget left the old homestead when they were quite old. Curiously one of the grandparents went to live with one daughter, who was married to a Patrick Durkin in Drimcoggy and the other went to live with another daughter Mary Gibbons Heneghan in Trean My Gt,Gt Grandmother.

It then appears that the one living in Drimcoggy became ill,so that the one living in Trean travelled across to Drimcoggy to visit, and they both died in Drimcoggy within hours of each other. They are both buried near the end of the church with the Durkins and the Donohues - their granddaughter Mary Durkin married into the Donohues many years later.

Thomas Lally and his wife's grandparents were totally different types of people. Thomas was a staunch ''Fenian'', and had an active part in the Land League. He was continually getting into trouble. He would often leave home in the middle of the night, and walk through the fields to Derassa and then down through the bogs, all the way to Moorehall, where he had relations who were tenants on the Moore estate.

From the Moore estate he was able to get to Michael Davitts' Land League meetings and bring the
subsequent news back to his fellow men. In comparison the Gibbons were very law abiding
people who worked for the landlord and paid the rent to keep a roof over their heads.

The Moores were decent landlords, who treated their tenants well. George Henry Moore (1810 - 1870), was educated in the Catholic faith in England and later at Cambridge University. His main interest was in horses and horse-racing. His brother, Arthur Augustus, was killed after a fall from the horse Mickey Free during the 1845 Aintree Grand National. At the height of the Great Irish Famine in 1846, he entered a horse called Coranna for the Chester Gold Cup and netted £17,000 from bets laid on the horse.

During the Famine he imported thousands of tons of grain to feed his tenants, and gave each of his
Mayo tenants a cow from his winnings. It is still remembered on the Moore estate that nobody was evicted from their home for non-payment of rent during hard times, and that nobody died there during the Famine.

At one stage Thomas Lally had to leave for America, where he stayed for 8 years, leaving his wife and 4 children at home. He was a constant thorn in the side of the landlord and his agents. Some of his activities would have been considered quite serious and he was periously close to a prison sentence.

For example,he organised the men of Derreveeney to chop down trees from the landlords estate beside the river, and then build something resembling a bridge across into the estate. The reason he did this was because Plunkett's herdsmen were very vigilant, and if any sheep or cattle crossed onto the landlords' estate, they were placed into a pound, for which there was a fee for having them returned. Often the tenants could not afford the excessive fees and thus the animals were never returned.

One big question remains :- Why did our Thomas Lally leave for America, leaving behind his wife and 4 children ? After his return from America, he had a further 4 children. He died on February 26th 1904 at the age of 60. His wife Mary Gibbons Lally died on December 23rd 1934. He lived just long enough to see the end of the Plunkett and landlord era, since in 1904 the board bought the land and divided it amongst the local people. They also built a bridge across the river, which is still there to this day.

Meine Mhor (as she was known)

From Teresa Lally: Meine Mhor must have been some woman.A man I spoke to a while back told me he used hear about her.She worked very hard and seemed fit for it..There's a photo of her as an old woman in Nuala's.She must have Luke Mor's genes - he was said to be the strongest man in Connaught. She was the woman who told all the stories to my father growing up.My parents are buried in that grave.

Biography

Luke Mor' Gibbons was born in 1829 in Gorteenmore, Mayo, IrelandG.1,2 He and Sarah Salog Thornton were married about 1849.1,2 He died on May 18, 1865, at age ~36, in Derryveeney, Mayo, IrelandG.1,2
Died when daughter was 7 or 8 years old

Was called Big Luke Gibbons (there was a Small Luke Gibbons nearby).

Luke Gibbons was the biggest and strongest man for miles around.Tradition has it that he built his entire house single-handedly, which is still standing today '96 although now used as a stable. He was supposed to have lifted and placed the huge cornerstones into place,by hand, during construction.

Unfortunately he died soon after on May 18th 1865, at the very young age of 36. Now Martin Gibbons (2) was left without a son. Their daughter-in-law Salog was left a very young widow, with only one daughter and he was worried that Salog might re-marry. They were therefore anxious to marry off their granddaughter Mary(14) as soon as she reached 16 or 17 years of age.

One of their neighours were a Pat and Ellen Lally.

Biography

Sarah Salog Thornton was born in 1821 in Gorteenmore, Mayo, IrelandG.1,2 She and Luke Mor' Gibbons were married about 1849.1,2 She died about 1901, at age ~80.1,2
From my Aunt May McGing married to Tommy Lally, Darrendafderg - Tommy's great grandmother was a sister to my mothers great grandmother on Barr Na Hanna, so my mother and Tommy were third cousins. Those two sisters were Thorntons, and their parents and themselves were evicted in Gorteenmore down near the Church in 1833. The year Plunkett came. It was a lovely cozy village and he wanted it for sheep. So like many more, they had to take to the hills and start digging, mostly in the valleys and sheltered spots and erect little cabins for themselves and had to pay rent on that as well.

The Thorntons settled in Gortnalderg, one daughter Salog married Big Luke Gibbons (There was a Small Luke Gibbons near by). He was Tommy's great grandfather and the other one Mary married Whalen in Barr Na Hanna.

Well, Saleog Thornton who married Luke Gibbons (Luke Mor) only had one daughter, Mary Gibbons, known as Nancy Mor. She married a neighbor, Tom Lally when she was a teenager. She was my husband's grandmother. Her father had died young and the story goes her grandparents who were still alive and well were afraid Saloeg, the girls mother, would marry again and they'd have none of their own to look after them in their old age so she did marry Tom Lally known as Thomas Nellie from next door. She had a large family, from 23 years down to one. He was involved in the Fenian movement and had to flee to America, leaving his wife and four children, returned after eight years and had four more.

In her youth, his wife, Nancy Mor visited Barr Na Hanna often. She was a first cousin to Pat Whalen's wife, my great grandmother and also a 1st cousin of Small Sean Whalen. She used to say in Irish "My heart rises when I go back to Barr Na Hanna" It sounds so much better in Irish. She loved to visit tem in Bar Na Hanna and if there were any relations place on the way, she would pass there and not stand on the floor as they used to say. (Research):The Thornton family were one of a dozen or so families evicted from the village of
Gorteenmore next to the catholic church by the new landlord '96 the ruthless Archbishop
Plunket (see chapter 2) - to clear the way for more sheep and cattle. They were simply left
to starve at the side of the road '96 although many took to the harsh mountainsides to scratch
out a living.

This was the start of more than 30 years of tyranny by the ruthless Plunkett.
Tradition has it that Salog (10) was a very smart woman who could handle all sorts of
problems.

Another (Sarah) married Luke Mor Gibbons in Derryveeney and she was Tommy Lally's (Aunt May's husband's) great grandmother.

She was known as Salog or Sarah.

DOB and DOD as well as marriage are guestimates based on family lore and alleged dob of oldest child.

"The story goes that our Gibbons' first came to Tourmakeady from Turlough, near Castlebar, and
originally came from England, they say. They had a flour mill in Tourmakeady, that is the old stone mill turning wheat into flour. They used to have a boat to cross Loch Mask and on one occasion the
mother was at home and she saw the boat returning across the lake. I presume they went to the
other side of the lake to buy the wheat because it is more fertile land that our side of Lough Mask.
She saw the boat coming across on a rough day. She went to prepare the dinner, and when she
looked out again there was no boat. She lost her husband and three sons. She must have had more
sons, because the name carried on. Now that may have been 200 or 300 years ago, I don't know."

Luke Thornton was also known as Seamus Ruadh O'droineann Thornton.1,2 Based on research done by others, it does seem that there were a couple of Luke Thornton's. But mine started in Gotrteenmore (near Tourmakeady Church) and were evicted and ended up in a place I can't find but nearby called Gornderg or simiilar. The other Luke Thornton and his family are from The Neale, which is across Loch Mask near Ballinrobe. DNA strongly supports a connection between tehse two families, maybe they were siblings or cousins.

Per Aunt May, these were evicted from Gorteenmore down near the church in 1833. The year Plunkett came. It was a lovely little village and Plunkett wanted it for sheep. So they had to take to the hills and start digging, mostly in the valleys and sheltered spots and erect little cabins for themselves and had to pay rent for that as well. The Thorntons settled in Gortnalderg (my spelling).

Also she says that there were two sons in addition to the two daughters.

Sorry now I have left out Padraig Mathu's wife. She was Ellen Boyle from Ballybannon, or Nellie ni baoil, so that is the reason they were called Maire Nellie and Tomas Nellie and so on. You see there were so many Lallys they had to distinguish between them.
