(Research):Micheal was originally buried in Europe and later moved to and interred in the U.S. Shot in action in Europe within a couple weeks following the invasion at Normandy (D-day). Based on a letter sent from a fellow soldier, Michael was shot during an advance, rose up in an effort to move, and was shot a second time and then died. Michael was originally buried in Bayeux, Normandy, France and later shipped back to the U.S. for burial at Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, New York, USA. The interment date at Long Island National Cemetery is 2 February 1948; three and a half years after his death.

NOTES FROM BILL CONROY (Michael's nephew):
Michael immigrated to the US about 1920; about three years after his brother Patrick. Michael first lived in Philadelphia, then moved to Chicago when Patrick got him a job as a steam fitter, which is the same occupation held by Patrick. They worked on the construction of the Drake Hotel in Chicago. Michael lived with Patrick's family at 832 E. 90th Street in Chicago (between Stoney Island and Cottage Grove) for a couple years 1931-1933. Then the Depression hit and Michael did not want to be a burden to the family so he enlisted in the Army in about 1933 or 1934. He was a sergeant in the US Army. Served for about 11 years. Michael was stationed in Alaska for awhile for military training. Michael died in within weeks after the D-day invasion at Normandy.

A U.S. Military Record shows a Michael J. Conroy born in 1900 in Irish Free State who resided in Cook County, Illinois. The enlistment date is 18 August 1939. Branch Code is Chemical Warfare Service, Regular Army. Education level is grammar school and civil occupation is heat treater. All this information seems consistent with our Michael Conroy, although the enlistment date doesn't agree with Bill Conroy's account of Michael enlisting in 1933 or 1934.

Mary Elizabeth Mellotte was born on August 6, 1920 in Castletown, Mayo, IrelandG. She died on November 11, 2012, at age 92, in Mayo, IrelandG.

Her mother (Mary Anne Mellotte) went to her parents farm house in Castletown (Neale) to be with Sarah Conroy (her mother) while giving birth to her (Mary Jennings).

Mary Jennings said that her nickname was Ginger while growing up.
