Former Decatur Postmaster Dies At Hospital Friday Evening
John W. Bosse, 80, former postmaster of Decatur, and a prominent local resident, died
at the Adams county memorial hospital at 6 o'clock Friday evening of complications.
Mr. Bosse had been in poor health for some time, and was taken to the hospital several
weeks ago.
Mr. Boss was a lifelong resident of Decatur, having been born in this city October 5,
1858, the son of Herman and Margaret Bosse. He was married to Catherine Durkin, and
she preceded him in death.
He was one of the city's leading citizens for many years, having operated the old Bosse
opera house for many years. He served as chairman of the Adams county Democratic
central committee, and was appointed as postmaster by President Wilson May 19, 1914,
serving until September 21, 1922.
He was a member of the Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name society,
and the St. Mary's Catholic church.
Surviving are two sons, Jerome of Decatur and Edmond A., of Indianapolis, and one
daughter, Mrs. Raymond Kohne of Decatur.
Funeral services will be held at the church Monday morning at 9 o'clock, with a
requiem high mass by Rev. Fathers J. J. Seimetz, Ambrose Kohne and Thomas Durkin.
Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery.
The body will be removed from the Gillig and Doan funeral home at 7 o'clock this
evening to the residence, 234 North First street, and may be viewed until time of the
funeral.?

Mrs. Leone Kohne, 67, of 327 Mercer avenue, wife of Decatur druggist Raymond B. Kohne, died at 1:10 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Adams county memorial hospital, where she had been a patient since Nov. 5. She had been ill for the past year with cancer.

Born September 15, 1895 in Adams county she was the daughter of John W. and Katherine Durkin-Bosse. A graduate of St. Joseph parochial school, and St. Joseph high school, she was a national president of Delta Theta Tau sorority in 1918-19.

June 12, 1923 she was married to Raymond B. Kohne. In addition to the husband, survivors include a son, Dr. Robert W. Kohne, LaFayette; two daughters, Mrs. L. A. (Rosemarie) O'Donnell, Springfield, Va.; Mrs. Joseph (Kathryn) Barbieri, Fort Wayne; one brother, Jerome J. Bosse, San Francisco, Calif., and 15 grandchildren,. One brother, Edmond A. Bosse, is deceased.

Mrs. Kohne was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church, the Rosary society, and the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was co-originator of the Good Fellows club in Decatur, the organization which distributes tons of presents for the needy in the Decatur area each Christmas.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic church, the Rev. Ambrose A. Kohne, brother-in-law officiating. Friends may call after 4 o'clock this afternoon at the Gillig & Doan funeral home. The Rosary society will recite the rosary at 7 p.m.

Rev. Maurice Meyers - The Rev. Maurice F. Meyers S.J., 68, once known as the "Russian priest with the Hoosier accent," died Friday at the Jesuit residence at Xavier University Mass is 10 a.m. today at the Schott Chapel of the Jesuit Community at Xavier, and mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent Church in Ft. Wayne Ind., by Ft. Wayne Bishop William McManus. A native of Ft. Wayne, Father Meyers had been trained to become a missionary in Russia but was sent to Shanghai with American troops when they took the city from the Japanese in World War II. He acquired his nickname there when working with Russian immigrants. After the war, Father Meyers taught Russian at Fordham University of Illinois and in Santos Brazil. He did make a tour of Russia in I960. He served as chaplain of a Boy Scout Jamboree in Greece in 1962. His last assignment was as administrator of a Byzantine Rite church in Massachusetts.

Rev. Maurice F. Meyers, S.J., 68, died Thursday in the Jesuit Residence Infirmary at Xavier University (XU). Father Meyers entered the Society of Jesus at Milford Aug. 27, 1930, and received his bachelor's degree from XU in 1934. He earned a master's degree at Loyola University, Chicago, for history and English and was ordained in the Byzantine Rite in Shanghai, China, in 1941. He was trained in the Russian language and was prepared for missionary work inside Russia. He taught at St. Michael's College, Shanghai and worked with Russian emigrants from 1942 to 1948. He also was a minister at the Russian Institute at Fordham University, a Russian language teacher at the University of Illinois, a minister at the College of Vladimiro, in Brazil, a chaplain for the Boy Scout Jamboree in Greece In 1962, pastor of a parish in Peru and administrator of a church In South Hadley, Mass. Fluent In Russian, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Polish and Portuguese, the closest he came to his Russian mission field was as a tour leader through Russia, Roumania and Europe in 1969. Father Meyers is survived by his brother, Robert S [E]. Meyers, Fort Wayne, Ind. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. today at the Jesuit Community Chapel, XU, and in Fort Wayne Monday. Burial will be In All Saints Cemetery, Chicago.

Robert Meyers, who served as mayor of Fort Wayne and as Allen Superior Court judge, has died. He was 93.

According to his son, Meyers died yesterday after a five-year battle with prostate cancer. He had been living with his son near Pittsburgh.

Meyers was appointed city controller in 1951 and became acting mayor when Mayor Harry Baals died in 1954. He was elected as a Republican in 1955 but didn't seek a second term.

While Meyers was mayor, the city nearly doubled in size, from 18 square miles to 35.

Meyers was an attorney and became Allen Superior Court judge when the court was created in 1971. He retired in 1985.

RAYMOND B. KOHNE DIES SATURDAY AT HOSPITAL

Raymond B. Kohne, 71, of 327 Mercer Avenue, well known retired Decatur druggist, and member of a prominent Adams County family, died at 5:50 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's hospital, Fort Wayne.Mr. Kohne had undergone surgery Sept. 8, and his condition had been serious since that time.

Mr. Kohne owned and operated the Kohne Drug Store on North Second street here for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1964.He was born in Decatur July 22, 1895, a son of Alphonse and Mary Geels-Kohne, and was a lifelong resident of this community. He attended the local schools and was a graduate of the University of Illinois school of pharmacy. A veteran of WWI, he served as service officer for many years.

He was first married to Leona Bosse, who preceded him in death Jan. 13, 1963. He was married April 24, 1964, to Laura Lauby Bosse, who survives. Mr. Kohne was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church, the Holy Name society, Decatur lodge 864, Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Post 43. He served as a member of the Decatur public library board for 26 years before retiring in 1965.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Dr. Robert Kohne of Lafayette; a stepson, Thomas Bosse of Cleveland, O.; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Katherine) Barbieri of Fort Wayne and Mrs. L. A. (Rosemarie) O'Donnell of Springfield, Va.; one brother, Dr. Gerald J. Kohne of Decatur; fours sisters, Mrs. Irene Cole of Cincinnati, O., Sister M. Francis Claire, C.S.A., of Fon Du Lac, Wis., Mrs. Arthur Lutz of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. Bertha Ashton of Fort Wayne; and 19 grandchildren. One brother, Rev. Ambrose Kohne, preceded him in death.

A solemn requiem high mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic church. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Simson Schmitt will be celebrant of the mass, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas Durkin, Fort Wayne, as deacon, and Rev. Leo Picquet, Lafayette, as sub-deacon. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. Friends may call at Gillig-Doan & Sefton funeral home after 2:30 p.m. today until time of the services. The rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock this evening.
