Patrick McGing
TUESDAY, 13 DECEMBER 2011 13:52
Kinuary West, Killawalla THE death has taken place at the University College Hospital Galway of Paddy McGing, Kinuary, a popular and well-known member of the local farming community.
He was son of the late Michael and Bridget McGing. Patrick was born into an era in rural Ireland when employment opportunities were scarce and the bright lights of faraway cities in England and America beckoned large numbers of young Irish men and women to come and search for a better environment to gain employment.

Paddy, who turned 99 on November 6, 2011, saw many changes among which were the arrival of the motor car and installation of electricity in rural Ireland. He welcomed those positive changes which gave hope to a young generation of Irish people who yearned for a better standard of living for themselves and their families.

In 1932, as a young man, he undertook that long train journey from Westport station to Dun Laoghaire and then embarked on the boat to Hollyhead before making his journey overland to Lancashire. While there he secured employment working on a farm assisting with the planting of large acreage of vegetables and also saving the hay during the summer months. He enjoyed his seasonal work in England and returned for the winter months to assist with the farm work on the family farm.

He married Margaret McDonnell and the couple was blessed with two sons, and three daughters. Patrick's personality was imbued with a good sense of humour. He was happy and jolly when he met his neighbours and friends, whether it was during his visit to one of the local towns or attending the fairs in Tourmakeady, Killawalla or Aughagower.

A natural musician, he loved to play some traditional music on his accordion. His happy and jovial personality bore testimony to a man who enjoyed life to the full. Deep down in his heart he held a very positive view of life always encouraging others to achieve their goals in life.

His conversations were frequently laced with witty expressions. During long periods of bad weather he could be heard say "don't worry about the bad weather as I have a month of good weather ordered for you"

He kept in touch with the world around him through his regular listening to Mid West Radio and reading local papers and magazines. In his native Kinuary and many of the surrounding communities Patrick's warm and affectionate personality cemented many lifelong friendships with those he met on the road through life. Large numbers of people came to pay their final tributes to Patrick on both days of his funeral.

His funeral took place from his home in Kinuary to Saint Patrick's Church, Killawalla and after requiem Mass he was laid to rest in Killawalla Cemetery. Fr Jack Garvey and Fr Paddy Hoban officiated at the liturgy for the funeral reception into the church.

During the funeral mass, celebrated by Fr Jack Garvey, the Lessons were read by James Thomas and Paula McNulty.

The responsorial psalm was sung by Marion Hoban. The prayers of the faithful were prayed by Margaret McGing, Mairead Prior, Mary Cunningham, Margaret Nimmo, James McGarry, Tony Scott, Gerry Brady and Thomas McGing.

Gifts, reflecting aspects of Patrick's life, were carried to the altar by Mary McGarry, Bridie Thomas, John and Sarah McGing, Michael Naughton, and John McGing.

The Post Communion Reflection was read by Margaret and Ann Marie McGing. The funeral liturgy was further enhanced by Paddy Joe Hoban who played some of Patrick's favorite tunes on the accordion.

Patrick was predeceased by his wife, Margaret in 1971.

To his daughters Mary McGarry (Corby, Northamptonshire) Bridie Thomas (Clooncundra, Castlebar), Kitty McNulty (Moyne, Kilalla) sons Johnnie and Martin, sons in laws, Jimmy McNulty, Jimmy Thomas, Mick McGarry, daughter in law, Sarah McGing, grandchildren and his many other relatives and friends we extend our sincerest sympathies. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Biography

Michael McGing was born in 1932 in Castlebar, Mayo, IrelandG. He died in May 2012, at age ~80, in Balloor East, Mayo, IrelandG.
Balloor East, Ballintubber

The death has taken place recently of Michael McGing, Balloor East, Ballintubber, a popular and well-known person in the community.

Affectionately known as Micky, he was an integral part of the Ballintubber community. In every rural community there are people whose lives are closely intertwined with the natural world around them. Micky was one of those people.

As a young man he worked in England for a period before returning to his native Ballintubber.

His long and interesting life was punctuated with lots of memorable experiences. Those experiences were stored carefully in his powerful memory and were often told to captive audiences down through the years. When it came to genealogy, Micky excelled. People looking for their ancestral roots in the locality found a great source of help when they talked to Micky. Indeed he had a wonderful sense of local history and could easily recall details of events that took place in the local community down through the years.

He was an ardent supporter of Gaelic Football both at club and county level. He enjoyed the occasions when he travelled with his neighbours to Croke Parke to watch Mayo senior team play in their quest for All Ireland honours.

He enjoyed his daily walks. He embraced every social occasion whether it was during a visit to Ballintubber Abbey or shopping in Corrigans Store, Ballintubber. He looked forward to attending music and dance sessions in the locality. During those sessions he loved to dance an old time waltz or sing a well-known song.

Each year he looked forward to the annual day trips in the parish whether it was the Ballyglass day trip, the Killawalla tour or the Ballintubber pioneers outing.
Micky was blessed to be living in such a caring community where everyone was so good to him. His neighbours and friends frequently called in to visit him and took him wherever he wanted to go.

When he returned home after a social occasion he enjoyed listening to traditional and ceili music on Mid-West Radio. He also enjoyed going to the ceilis in the locality and it was fitting that accordion music was played as he was laid to rest in Ballintubber Abbey cemetery.

During his journey through life he radiated a wonderful friendship to those he met each day. It was fitting that the high esteem in which he was held in his own community and indeed much further afield was reflected as large crowds came to bid farewell to Micky during his funeral from Ballintubber Resource Centre to Ballintubber Abbey where his funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Frank Fahey, Fr Seán O'Toole and Fr Paddy Gilligan.

As the funeral approached the Abbey a guard of honour was formed to line the way for Micky's final journey to the Abbey.

His sudden passing from his community has bade farewell to a gentleman who made an indelible impression on those he encountered along life's journey.

To his sister, Nora McCabe Manchester, niece, Patricia and nephew Peter, his many other relatives, neighbours and friends we extend our sincerest sympathies. May his gentle soul rest in peace. (Research):Ireland, Civil Registration Births Index, 1864-1958
