Croghrim, Tourmakeady

The death has taken place recently of Mary Kate McGing, Croaghrim, Tourmakeady, a woman who built strong bridges of friendship with many people on her ninety-four year journey through life.

She was daughter of the late Pat and Ann McGing, Glenmask. After completing her primary education in Sraheen National School, she worked for a time in a tea room in Lower High Street, Westport. Afterwards she moved to London where she found work as a house-keeper.

On January, 8 1939, she married Anthony McGing in Sutton and the couple were blessed with ten children. In 1940, the couple returned to Croaghrim where they reared their family in an environment infused with great love and affection. At that time taking care of the farm meant many long days of hard work with the seasons dictating the chores on the land. Looking after her family and attending to the numerous other duties in the home and on the farm kept her busy. However like so many of her generation, Mary Kate was happy and content with her way of life in Croaghrim.

She was a deeply religious and spiritual woman who had a great attachment to her Christian faith. She was blessed with a wonderful sense of God in her life and this was fuelled by her regular attendance at Mass and the Sacraments. She saw the good in everyone and was always glad to give good and sound advice. She appreciated how community spirit in her local community fuelled the building of a roadside Marian Shrine beside the former Glenmask N.S. Only last August she attended the annual Mass at the shrine there.

She will be remembered as a woman with a great sense of humor complemented by a welcoming smile. She had a great understanding of local history and among the interesting stories she often recalled were about her days attending Sraheen N.S. and the time the late Fr. Malone made the film Lovely Ireland in and around the Aughagower, Westport and Partry areas.

Music and song were very important to Mary Kate who enjoyed playing a few traditional tunes on her accordion. She enjoyed every social occasion especially those when she was in the company of her family, neighbours and friends at home and overseas. Throughout her interesting journey through life she stored in her mind numerous stories about her days in Sraheen NS, working in Westport and England and it was fitting that many of those stories and experiences were recorded in her personal book called "Joys and Sorrows of Yesterdays" .

Mary Kate was a loyal and trusted friend to all of us and her name will be forever engraved in our hearts. Through her long life she radiated lots of affection and love to so many people and it was fitting that large crowds of mourners came to bid farewell to their great friend during her funeral from Killawalla Community Centre and for her requiem Mass in the nearby Saint Patrick's, Church.

During her funeral Mass, celebrated by Fr Jack Garvey, the Lessons were read by Tony McGing, (Grandson) and Tony Creaney (grandson). The Responsorial Psalm was sung by Philomena McGing (Grand daughter). The prayers of the faithful were read by Vinnie Dolan, Gary McNeely, Marie Maloney, Mary Derrig, Carmel Walsh and Sara Veasey. Gifts symbolising aspects of Mary Kate's life - her accordion, a family photo and The Bread and Winewere carried to the altar by her daughters, Mary, Ann, Margaret and Marion. The post communion reflection was read by Ann Scott and excerpts from Mary Kate's book, giving an overview of her long life, were read by her eight grandchildren.

To her six sons Tommy (Croaghrim), Micheal (Killawalla), John (Achill) and Paddy,Tony and Mattie (London), daughters Ann, Margaret and Marion (Croaghrim), Mary (England), daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, twenty-nine grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren, sister, Nora Dolan, Sraheen; sister-in-law, May McGing, close family friends, Martin Curry, Michael, Noreen and Marie Maloney and her many other relatives and friends we offer our sincerest sympathies. May her gentle soul rest in peace. (Research):Name MARY MC GING

She was the prettiest girl going into Tourmakeady Church in her youth and she was still a fine lady. I remember Uncle Patrick Cavanagh as the most intelligent man I ever knew. I learned a lot from him. He was over eighty years and going to night school. I asked him WHY? He was fluent in Gaelic, English, French and Spanish and wanted to perfect his German before he died. His wife, Aunt Mary, died first in 1954. He died in 1959 aged 88 years. They are both buried in Glasnevin in Dublin RIP.

May Lally said:
Nappy [Penelope McGing née Morrin -mother-in-law of my grandfather] said the Cavanaghs were out with others in Partree with sticks beating the poor people from this area when they were coming from Ballinrobe with little bits of food during the famine years. She was more against the marriage than Philip [Big Phil McGing - future father-in-law]. A neighbour here near next door congratulated Philip on his daughter's marriage saying he was a good, honest man, that they should be pleased and Philip replied: 'Well we are not pleased marrying a man that hasn't a bit of land or a cow, or a calf, a pig or a hen or anything. If he got sick or died what would she do? She would be begging.' The land was very important in those days. Teachers had no insurance [security] or no future, or so they thought. They were proved wrong. I heard from an old woman here that he could have any girl in the area but that he only wanted Mary McGing. She was very beautiful, she said. Wasn't she handsome in her old age? I think they had a small wedding in our house. I never heard that Nappy boycotted the wedding. The village people here knew him very well and they liked him.

Per Aunt Anne -

Mary : Born 1880 in Churchfield. Married Patrick Cavanagh in 1902. He was a school teacher in Treen and Glensaul. They had three children. They moved to Ballinrobe where they owned a tavern on the Main Street - now owned by Gannon. They sold it in 1939 and retired to Dublin. I lived with them when I first came to Dublin in 1945.
