You may remember when I sent you the Census ' I referred to 1901 John McGing with a sister-in-law Sarah (Naughton) who lived on High Street at that time. She had been married to John's brother, Patrick, who had died by 1901. Sarah worked as a dressmaker and had 4 children. By 1911 they had all moved to John's Row, and one of these children, James had become a Tailor (from the School enrolment records). Mary A. McGing and her sisters were the children of this James. Death of Mr. Jas. McGing

HIGH STREET, WESTPORT


On Thursday morning. 28th December, ult., Mr. James McGing, Boot and Leather Merchant of Lower High Street Westport, passed peacefully to his eternal reward at the fine old age of 84 years. He retained all his faculties to the fast, and up to quite recently was pursuing his life long avocation. In his last illness he had all the loving care of his affectionate family and all the best medical and best nursing skill could do to prolong his days. Deceased was a member of one of the oldest and most respected Westport families. He died in the house in which he was born, and in which his mother before him was born. This carries us back 150 years in the history of Westport to a time when High Street was the principal sheet of the town, and the place of exit and entry of all going to or coming from Dublin, and the best business shops of the town were on that street, and for all that century and a half and probably for much longer, his progenitors and deceased carried on business there, and today a son succeeds him in the same house. The late Mr. McGing, over all the long years of his exemplary life, was a model of solid Catholic piety, regularity, and business rectitude. He gave the first hour of every day to God, by attendance at morning Mass at Westport Parish Chuck He devoted his whole time and attention to his business, and took no part in public affairs. Always well prepared, when death came it did not surprise him, and fortified by all the rites of Holy Church to which he was all his long life so devoted, he passed most peacefully away surrounded by his loving children and frilly resigned to the Divine Will.

On Friday evening his remains wit removed from his late residence to Westport Parish Church, and there placed on a catafalque in front of the High Altar. Until a late hour on Friday night, large numbers surrounded the bier offering up prayers for him.

At 11 o'clock on Saturday morning, High Mass do requiem was celebrated for the eternal repose of his soul. The officiating priests were:-.Rev. Father Gunningan, C. C., Westport (celebrant), Rev. Father Godfrey, C.C., Lacanvey, (deacon), Rev. Father Martin, C.C. (sub-deacon), Rev. Father Daly. Adm., (master of ceremonies. In the choir were:--.Rev. Dr. Browne, Rev. Dr. Gibbons, Very Rev, Canon M. MacDonald, P.P., Newport, Rev. Father Gibbons, Rev. Father Malone, Rev. Father Hanrahan, C.C., Westport.

At one o'clock, same day, the funeral took place from the Church to the family burial place, Oughavale. It was one of the largest ever seen in Westport. Motor cars, side cars, horsemen and pedestrians made up a funeral cortege that must be a mile in length, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather. It was a very striking evidence of esteem for one who always kept out of the light of publicity, and was known only in his business relations.

King, Miss Mary McGing, Miss Peggy McGing, Miss Maureen Hawkshaw (nieces) Joseph King (nephew):Myles Hawkshaw, James Hawkshaw, Dr. Hawkshaw (brothers-in-law) Miss Lily Hawkshaw, Mrs. Hawkshaw, Ballinrobe; Mrs. Hawkshaw, The Demesne, (sisters-in-law); Mrs. Horkan, Mrs. McGlynn, Miss Giblin, James McGing, Arthur O'Malley, C.
